UMB CURE Scholars Program

Shakeer's Story

UMB CURE Scholars Program A Project of Community Engagement

The UMB CURE Scholars Program is a groundbreaking science pipeline program that prepares sixth- to 12th-grade students in West Baltimore for health care and research careers through hands-on workshops, lab experiences, and mentorship. UMB's sixth- and seventh-grade CURE Scholars are the youngest ever to participate in the National Cancer Institute's Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE) national program. Other partners include Baltimore City Public Schools and private as well as public businesses. Support from individuals and companies will enable the program, which is driven to build a diverse biomedical workforce, to change the trajectory of children growing up in poverty and in vulnerable situations. Your donation will help to:

  • Offer more hands-on science/STEM experiences
  • Train more mentors
  • Provide more workforce development opportunities to families
  • Expand to additional West Baltimore School sites
  • Expose, inspire, and excite under-represented minorities to become cancer researchers and health care providers

UPDATE: The Board of Trustees of the University of Maryland Baltimore Foundation has generously established a $25,000 match challenge to benefit the UMB CURE Scholars Program. Between now and February 28, 2018, all gifts to CURE will be matched dollar for dollar up to the committed amount.

Giving opportunities for a number of gifts sizes are listed below. Please take this opportunity to double the impact of your gift and support the next generation of heath care and research professionals.
